But suffices to say we can host our own cloud for now. Assuming I’d live for another 70, that’s 1.4TB total, not accounting for pixel density inflation and the likelihood I’d be taking more photos as I go. Estimating the amount of space it would take up… I’ve generated 100GB of photos over the last 5 years, which averages to about 20GB a year. After all, I just upgraded the storage size. After shopping around for alternatives and looking at costs, I figured it may be easier to just run my own cloud storage out of my Unraid server.

The free lunch ends at some point, so I’ve decided to look for an alternative cloud hosting for my photos. I don’t really want to continue losing pixels to Google, or be caught off guard when the terms and conditions change overnight. It’s also unclear how I’m supposed to get my Photos back out with all the information intact (for example, EXIF data is missing from photos downloaded via Google Photos API). This issue hasn’t exactly affected Pixel users, but it’s probably a matter of time. All I’m really asking for is that whatever bits I upload to the cloud are the same bits I download, but apparently that is not the case, which is disappointing. I suppose I could pay, but even so, Google does this thing where they downsample your photo and etc. If your container’s IP differs from your desktops, you are connected.Google recently announced they were going to discontinue the unlimited photo storage on Google Photos, even for Pixel users. Take note of the IP the command returns and then google for “What is my IP” on your desktop (without being connected to the VPN). Another way of confirming the Docker container’s functionality is by entering its console and executing the command curl ifconfig.io.

Once started, you can take a look at the logs to figure out whether a connection to the VPN could be established. Verifying that your VPN container is working With the authentication file created and the OpenVPN file copied, your OpenVPN Docker container is ready and can be started.
NEXTCLOUD UNRAID SETUP PASSWORD
Open the file and enter your VPN username on the first line and your password on the second. In the same directory ( /mnt/user/appdata/openvpn-client/) you will want to create a new file titled vpn.auth. Rename the file to vpn.ovpn and copy it to the folder /mnt/user/appdata/openvpn-client/ OpenVPN-Client created. That way you should be getting the best performance while still remaining anonymous. I recommend you go for the closest location to where you are. Once extracted, you will find numerous files in the downloaded folder, which will allow you to connect to different locations. Your VPN has to provide OpenVPN (.ovpn) files for this setup to work There are a number of comparable Docker containers available in Unraid’s Community Applications, but I can guarantee that the one mentioned above works. This container will be responsible for connecting to the VPN, through which other containers can route their traffic.
NEXTCLOUD UNRAID SETUP INSTALL
To start things off, you are going to want to install the community application OpenVPN-Client ( dperson/openvpn-client). Installing and setting up an OpenVPN client With Windscribe and PIA, I know there is no rule forbidding me from using this setup, and I haven’t heard of any other VPN providers forbidding it either. This way you will only use a single slot for all traffic because there is only one application directly connecting to the VPN. In my opinion, the better alternative is to use a single OpenVPN Docker container on Unraid and route any number of applications through it. If I were to set up each container individually, I would soon max out my account. For example, Private Internet Access, which is one of the VPN providers I use, allows up to 10 simultaneous connections. While there is nothing inherently bad about these Docker containers, they do have one major drawback: You use up one of your VPN slots for every application you configure.
